I·The Operator

Hospitality got me at sixteen.
I never got over it.

A glass of champagne at the door. A cold towel that smelled like lavender. Someone who walked you to your room and told you the story of the place. That was the first hotel I ever loved, and it is the standard I have held every hotel to since.

I'm Adam Ramirez. I have opened, rebuilt, rescued and run independent hotels for more than ten years. Today I do that work for owners who want a real revenue department without hiring one.

II·The story

Six hotels that made me,
in the order they happened.

Every one of these taught me something I still use on a client's property every morning.

  1. 1The roadEvery state, every capital

I saw the country young, from a big-box hotel bed.

Every state. Every capital. And in most of them, a room in a hotel with hundreds of others just like it: a line at the desk, a key card, a door that closed behind you. Clean, fine, forgettable. For sixteen years that was what a hotel was, as far as I knew.

    What I kept

A hotel can be so much more.

  2. 2Andreas Hotel & Spa, Palm SpringsSixteen, then the front desk at eighteen

Then a hotel welcomed me, and I understood the whole thing.

The Andreas was the first time a hotel felt like being welcomed into someone's home. By eighteen I was working its front desk. We poured a glass of champagne for every guest at arrival. We rolled oshibori towels, iced them, scented them with lavender and carried them out to the pool with frozen champagne grapes. We walked every guest to their room and told them the history of the place. Sinatra in the lobby. A candy bar at night. A real breakfast in the morning.

I was hooked, and I have never worked in anything else.

    What I kept

    Hospitality is warmth.

  3. 3The Saguaro, Palm SpringsDirector of Guest Experience

255 rooms, two bars, two restaurants, a spa, and every kind of guest.

I was the right hand to the operation: the spa, the gym, housekeeping, and the guest scores for all of it. I built the programs that moved those scores. Chips and salsa and a margarita at check-in. Managers in the lobby with the guests, on purpose. We climbed into the top four hotels in Palm Springs on TripAdvisor.

A college fraternity on one side of the property and a national cat show on the other, the same weekend, and both go home happy.

    What I kept

Hospitality is for everyone who walks in.

  4. 4Sands Hotel & Spa, Indian WellsFront Office Manager, then Director of Operations

Luxury is the senses. No detail left alone.

A 46-room boutique that went Mediterranean and Moroccan in a valley full of mid-century modern, and pulled it off. L'Occitane in the bath. Frette on the bed. An award-winning chef in the kitchen. Events for brands like Levi's. I worked beside one of the best sales strategists in independent hotels and watched her build an empire out of 46 rooms.

    What I kept

How a place smells, tastes and feels when you walk in is the product. Everything else is logistics.

  5. 5Bellevue Oasis and Float, Palm SpringsTwo openings, one pandemic

The bank, the build, and the week the world closed.

Two openings where I first sat across from a lender with numbers I had built myself: ADR, RevPAR, the whole projection. Then I put on boots and did the build, every walkway, every gas line, every square inch. When the pandemic hit, we rolled out self check-in before anyone thought it was cool, and with exterior corridors we kept taking guests while others closed.

That is where I fell for the technology. Not for its own sake, but for what it frees people to do: the handwritten note, the wax seal on the envelope, the small things that are the whole point.

    What I kept

A digitized check-in gives the front desk back to the guest.

  6. 6LIT Property GroupArea Director, a portfolio of independents

Many markets, one portfolio, and the same question every morning.

The Twist, turned from condos and short-term rentals into a real hotel. The Paloma, opened to $1.5M in its first year. Properties in mountain towns, Palm Springs, Cathedral City and Ottawa, each with its own market and its own answer: group business or single-night rooms, which booking sites, which rate, which systems. Then the money beyond the room: concierge programs, private chefs I hired myself, events for brands like Hugo Boss.

    What I kept

What is this hotel worth tonight, and who is going to pay it?

  7. Over a dozen hotels opened to date.

And another one on the way, in Palm Desert. More on that soon.

III·What I believe
Hospitality crosses every line we draw. Language, politics, money. It is kindness, in a room, for a stranger who has handed you the most vulnerable hour of their day: the one where they sleep.

People make hospitality. Not software, not brands, not a flag over the door. The software I bring does the math so the people can do the hospitality.

IV·A reference

A reference from the finance desk.

Bill is not a hotel person. He ran the P&L, the budgets and the monthly reports at LIT, and his desk sat across from Adam's. He judged the work through the numbers.

Bill Waters

“I was the controller at LIT Property Group. I didn't come from hospitality. I had the P&L, the budgets and the monthly reports, and I watched Adam's work strictly through the numbers.

What struck me was that he was proactive about setting rates, not reactive. He was always out in front with a strategy instead of reacting to what everyone around us was doing, and he did that for all the properties. It was clear he was getting more money out of them by the way he handled daily rates, trading rate against occupancy, lowering when necessary and raising whenever possible. He moved the needle, and everybody recognized it.

The Twist was a great example. It already had a following and high occupancy, and Adam recognized that the same rooms would earn far more as a hotel than as apartments. He seized that opportunity.

Adam also showed an interest in the whole P&L, not just the one metric of ADR. He saw the whole picture. But his strength was setting those daily rates, and being proactive about it.”

V·Why this company

An independent hotelier wears every hat.
I know. I wore them.

HR. Marketing. Sales. Hiring, firing, maintenance. The booking sites. The prices. I kept wishing someone would hand me the book. There was no book, so I wrote it one hotel at a time.

Ramirez Hospitality Group exists to hand you that book, faster and easier than I got it, so you can get back to your why: the design, the music in the lobby, the guest at the door.
